Alla prima, or direct painting, is an expressive method of painting from
life. In this class, students learn to paint in full color without employing
an elaborate underdrawing or underpainting. Students are taught to
identify value patterns, mix vibrant color with a limited palette, and use
brush strokes that create form and add vitality to the surface. The first
six weeks, the class will work from still life objects. Each set-up will
reflect specific challenges to explore. In the last half of the semester,
lessons learned from the still life will be applied to portrait painting
using a live model. Famous painters who have worked in this alla
prima style are as diverse as Richard Schmid, Charles Hawthorne,
Claude Monet, and John Singer Sargent.
